Objetos de Aprendizaje y Discapacidad - Learning Objects and Disability

This morning in the University of Dundee, I had the oportunity to continue a conversation with Professor Nick Hine about a particular subject that seems quite interesting to me: Disability and ICT in education, and more precisely the issues that have to do with digital educational content.
Was a long and nice talk that drops me a happy outcome as a conclusion: learning objects as open educational resources encourages production of inclusive educational material. It is a simple but strong idea behind this: being adaptable, editable, a learning object gives to an expert teacher in the disability issues, the oportunity to modify, adapt, change the format of information and also the information itself, just to to give the LO a greater lever of usability thinking of learners who have disability problems.
It is a quite complex problem and very sensitive too, and has to do with education state policies and with the most private and personal aspects of a human being.
There are some much to search for indeed but anyway it is still something promising in the air.

- Some of the reasons I think ADDIE is not an instructional design model

Some people have told me that I like to go against the river flow. Perhaps it is just like this, though, the truth is that to go against the river flow causes many headaches but also some other very personal satisfaction.
The work around the construction of virtual learning environments and learning objects has shown to me the need to adress a critical point of view about some concepts that are handled as normal or almost daily. One of this is the instructional design.
Quite contrary to what many people think in that regard, I believe that ADDIE is not an instructional design model; is rather an excellent model for project development. The arguments that support this assertion are just published in the Journal “Educación y Educadores”of December 2008. (sorry, is only in spanish....just for now)

Los que hacen las cosas bien - People that do things right

Bravo!! Bravo!

"Desconectado" RVT (Conferencia) - "Unplugged" RVT (Conference)

The first conference at "Unplugged" from the RVT focused on the experience of the University of Lagos in Chile, through the Center for Teaching and Learning Resources (CREA). Interesting experience. I see with great satisfaction that Chile is working on the issue of Learning Objects on the Conceptual definition developed in Colombia . Unfortunately they do not make a proper referencing of the definition, which seems to me delicate for a Center like this.

-------

My fault ... My fault... it has been three months since my last blog post.
I have been invited recently to give some conferences aboutn learning objects, and I have realized some recurrent questions related with: ¿In which direction the topic of learning objects will be pointed?, "What will be its future scenarios of development?
Anyway, the answer to these questions can be quite varied. However, I think that the most striking answer has to do with the m-learning. (the use of mobile communication devices in education).
It calls my attention that the academic community is repeating historic mistakes from more than a decade ago. I remember that towards the mid-nineties when it started the “e-learning boom” so many universities initiated convert –to-digital processes of content and they put it on the internet and proudly proclaimed themselves as the pioneers of e-learning. Only after a few years, a large amount of energy and a lot of work and investment they began to recognize that this kind of efforts, not only were “not adding any value” efforts to the educational process, but that were generating a contrary outcome related to expectations.
This is happening again. Now it is not computers or networks but mobile phones involved in this new - old story.
I have witnessed experiences of mobile devices used in higher education. Such experiences do not go beyond using the phones as portable browsers accessing content pages that have been designed, at best, to be displayed on the screen of a personal computer. However, in addition to other possible features, if anybody will use a mobile device to interact with digital content, you do not believe that, at least, is necessary to think about the implications of this hardware in the usability of educational content?
This is the question we should disclose: how to design learning objects to be used through mobile devices?
This undoubtedly is a question of learning objects mediated teaching. (subject of my doctoral thesis)

Objetos de Aprendizaje y Solidaridad Educativa - Learning Objects and Educational Solidarity

------------------

Did you know that 2007 was the year of solidarity at the Universidad de La Sabana?

Many institutional and personal efforts have been undertaken to bring aid and encouragement to people who are living under difficult circumstances, framed almost always in contexts of insecurity, inequality and indifference.

Acting to provide shelter, clothing, food and health is the first thing that comes to mind when we speak about solidarity. However, it is possible to find other ways to act in solidarity, from the academy, and thereby contribute significantly to the development of our environment. Sharing knowledge is one of them. However, this can be achieved only if it makes it easier for teachers to move content out of their desks and translate it into digital resources that can be disclosed and exploited by all people with training needs related to such knowledge.
Here comes into scene…the learning objects.

What is meant by learning object?

A proper search about this topic throws many definitions and, unfortunately, many of them generate more ambiguity to certainty.

Recognizing this fact and taking into account the need for a clearer conceptual and procedural definition of learning objects, the Universidad de La Sabana has been involved in the construction of a conceptual definition on this topic, into an inter-institutional effort coordinated by the Ministry of National Education.

A learning object (LO) is defined as:

"A digital self-contained and reusable entity, with a clear educational purpose, with at least three internal and editable components: content, learning activities and elements of context. The learning objects must have an external structure of information to facilitate their identification, storage and retrieval: the metadata. " (Chiappe, Segovia, & Rincon, 2007).

Recognized as a kind of digital educational material, a learning object can be placed into a repository, which would allow it to the entire world, not just recognize the academic output of a teacher (apart of his writings) and the enormous contribution that this is part of the educational institution that supports it, but also allows the world to make use of such objects applied to various educational contexts and adapting them according to their own training needs, whenever possible.

The projects around LO at the Universidad de La Sabana are following, from the distance, the footsteps of the MIT´s Open Courseware initiative, demonstrating that it is possible to make knowledge open to the world in solidarity and thereby ratifying their contribution to improving the educational conditions of a nation as a key factor in their social and economic development.

-------------

I had already mentioned in a previous post about the convenience of the identification of the learning objects as open educational resources to strengthen their reusability. However, this issue also has a significant impact as a production issue.
It has been already mentioned for a long time, the importance of building interdisciplinary teams for producing digital educational materials as a starting point to promote the dynamics of production of learning objects in the universities. I Still think it's important to do this, given the support that these teams provide to teachers from the standpoint of design and computer programming of the objects. However, if the production of these devices is characterized by being open (see Cape Town Declaration), it would be possible to break team´s productive barriers imposed by their own production capacity limitations, in terms of budget limitations, human, infrastructure, physical plant, etc.
Learning Objects as open education resources, allow to integrate to productive chain to the users of these resources, encouraging their adaptation.
Resolving issues related to quality management in this viral production scheme , this would provide a substantial increase in the volume of digital quality educational material available, which also help to promote the use of these materials (as a case of supply and demand).

-----------

It is very common to find the granularity as one of the most representative characteristics of learning objects. As the way you can make an interpretation, I think granularity is a pretty naive concept. I refer to a part of a definition that I was reviewing a few days ago and that surprised me enormously.
He says: An object of learning "has to be" granular "indivisible, so that can not be subdivided into smaller units that retain the same meaning."

Is this possible? Think calmly on the assertion inside.
Could we , in terms of this definition, to make a learning object about "Dog"?. Of course not, because the dog could conceptually divided into smaller units, for example, dog races or the skeletal system of the dog. And so on could divide each of these units in other smaller until you came inevitably to the conclusion that we could only make learning objects about electrons or some kind of smaller particle . It is, by any perspective, a vain effort to play under the rules of "minimum units" when we talk about learning objects.
